Correctional Officer I
Salary: $64,209.60 – $78,041.60 Annually.
Position Summary:
This is the entry level class into the Correctional Officer series. Incumbents are expected to perform a variety of duties in inmate intake, processing, and custody; in a training capacity learn to perform the full range of correctional duties characteristic of the class of Correctional Officer II. Incumbents are expected to fully qualify for Correctional Officer II at the end of one year in this position.
Essential Functions:
- Receives, books and processes incoming inmates; prepares related paperwork; photographs inmates, and takes fingerprints.
- Maintains security through key, door, tool, and equipment control.
- Receives visitors; processes correspondence, phone calls and request slips.
- Controls contraband through routine facility and inmate searches; supervises the conduct and security of inmates in cells and in movement during meals, visitation, and institutional activities.
- Supervises inmates in the performance of assigned duties; is responsible for the discipline and control of inmates; assists medical and psychiatric staff in the management of inmates.
- Promotes positive attitudes among inmates through instruction and discipline.
- Watches for changes in moods or attitudes among the inmates that might indicate a security or safety risk.
- Investigates non-criminal incidents within the facility.
- Performs monetary transactions, data terminal operations, and processing of booking, bail, warrants and court paperwork.
- Prepares prisoners for and assists in their transportation; processes inmate discharges and release.
- Arranges for medical care of sick and/or injured inmates.
Requirements:
- Graduation from high school or possession of G.E.D.
- Applicants must be minimum 21 years of age at time of appointment.
- Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties.
