Job Summary

The Corporal performs general law enforcement work that includes some or all of the following: patrolling campus buildings and grounds on foot or vehicle; maintaining order; enforcing laws, rule and regulations; apprehending and processing violators; initiating police action; preparing and presenting oral and written reports; providing assistance to campus personnel, students and the public in public safety matters; and serving as the lead or senior member on a campus patrol operation. A team leader, assistant watch commander, or patrol agent responsible for leading a shift and providing direction to officers in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patrols area within the jurisdiction of UPD, arrests violators of federal, state, and/or local laws, and prepares factual reports concerning the arrests
  • Investigates and prepares complete reports of crimes occurring on the University campus wherein the perpetrator has evaded arrest or detection
  • Cite violators of traffic regulations within the specified jurisdiction; conducts initial investigation of crimes occurring on state property and investigates potential safety hazards either observed or reported
  • Provides security for large gatherings, assemblies and/or other university activities or events
  • Participates in emergency preparedness, crime prevention and safety programs on an as required bases
  • Develops, implements, and enforces campus and department policies, procedures, and regulations within the assigned area of responsibility
  • Serves as the lead or senior member on assigned campus patrol operation; assists watch commander or patrol agent responsible for leading a shift and providing direction to officers in the field
  • Assumes command in absence of superiors
  • Provides on-the-job training to assigned staff; develops lesson plans and training for community groups
  • Provides public representations and workshops in support of department programs

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU, and SJSU policies and procedures.
  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills.
  • Ability to perform the wide range of duties associated with a sworn position within a small law enforcement agency.
  • Ability to wear a full duty uniform with specified safety equipment and perform the basic job functions of a POST-certified law enforcement officer (arrest and control techniques, firearms qualifications, operations of emergency vehicles, etc.).
  • Work shifts will vary and may include nights and weekends.
  • Ability to meet all requirements for POST Certification.
  • Ability to callback with minimal notice for major incidents and emergency situations on campus.
  • Ability to occasionally travel to other campus offices and off campus locations.
  • Ability to maintain composure in highly stressful and sometimes volatile situations.
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Ability to maintain a Valid California Driver’s License.
  • Ability to possess a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing.
  • Eligibility to be a peace officer in the State of California.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) academy and a Basic Course Certificate
  • Two or more years of active law enforcement experience

License

A valid driver’s license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver’s license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • POST Intermediate Certificate
  • Three (3) or more years as a sworn officer

Compensation

Classification: Corporal
Anticipated Hiring Salary: $9,046/month
CSU Salary Range: $6,720/month – $9,909/month
