Position Summary:

The position of Community Service Officer (CSO) is a civilian, non-sworn employee of the Spearfish Police Department performing work that supports basic law enforcement operations. The position has a variety of critical responsibilities, which include parking enforcement, found property, taking and preparing non-hazardous crime reports, monitoring and directing traffic, and carrying out non-sworn assignments as directed.

Essential Functions:

• Maintains regular and reliable attendance with a physical presence.
• Responds to citizen complaints and completes reports for incidents that do not require a sworn police officer under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant.
• Assists with traffic accidents, traffic-related issues/ hazards, and motorist assists.
• Responds to calls for abandoned vehicles, general parking complaints, VIN verifications and conducts downtown two (2) hour parking enforcement.
• Directs traffic as needed for special events, police escorts, or emergency situations.
• Prepares reports for prosecutions, collects evidence, and provides testimony in court as necessary.
• Provides support at school events or special city events as required.
• Responds to reports of found property and secures property as necessary.
• Conducts drive-through of parks, addressing or reporting any public safety hazards.
• Gives information and/or directions to the public.

Requirements:

• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
