Salary: $24.45 – $30.57 Hourly

Position Summary:

To perform a variety of non-sworn law enforcement support duties for the Ramsey Police Department. This position provides cost-effective public safety and superior customer service while performing regularly scheduled community service work. It also assists with high priority unanticipated calls for service and public protection and crime prevention.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist police officers at the scene of accidents with traffic control
  • Assist in towing situations
  • Assist with traffic and radar surveys
  • Respond to non-emergency calls for service as assigned by Central Communications
  • Receive and investigate ordinance complaints and document findings
  • Enforce parking ordinances
  • Perform animal control duties, including picking up stray animals and delivering them to the appropriate shelter
  • Issue citations for animal ordinance violations and handle dog follow-up procedures and related records
  • Receive and transmit messages over police dispatching radio
  • Deliver police vehicles for maintenance and washing
  • Assist with Fleet Maintenance
  • Deliver and pick up correspondence
  • Provide escorts
  • Provide general support services to Police Officers
  • Perform administrative errands
  • Perform code enforcement activities
  • Assist with crime prevention
  • Provide evidence of continual law enforcement school enrollment; this is a requirement of the position
  • Understand and appreciate the role, responsibilities and limitations of non-sworn personnel in the delivery of police services
  • Follow oral and written instructions such as supervisor’s work orders and equipment operation manuals
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance during scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary
  • Provide effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations and citizen customers
  • Maintain positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, other jurisdictions and outside agencies and the general public
  • Perform other duties as apparent or assigned (within the ability and resources of the Community Service Officer) at the verbal or written direction of the Chief of Police, Police Captains, Police Sergeants, Police Office Supervisor, Community Resources Officers or their designee

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Currently enrolled in a law enforcement program and able to provide proof of enrollment
  • If selected, must provide ongoing documentation of enrollment throughout employment. Employment in this role is limited to no more than five (5) years, or one (1) year after eligibility, whichever comes first
  • Possession of a valid Minnesota driver’s license in good standing
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR, or ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history check and driver’s license check

Preferred Requirements:

  • Have formal training in traffic and pedestrian control
  • Formal training in traffic and/or pedestrian control
  • Experience or training in observation and recollection of events
  • Experience or training in law enforcement or security-related work
  • Experience or training in animal control or handling
  • One (1) year or more of public contact or customer service experience
