Position Summary:

Under supervision of a Communications Supervisor, the Communications Officer operates a variety of specialized equipment and coordinates all emergency and non-emergency calls and walk in traffic coming into the police department for Police, Fire, EMS, and other city services in a professional and courteous manner, determining nature and urgency of calls. Position requires constant contact with the public in stressful situations that require clear thinking, calmness, stability, tact, good judgment, and clearly understandable speaking skills.

Essential Functions:

  • Receive emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, dispatch appropriate law enforcement units, emergency services or city department personnel.
  • Maintain certified access and enter sensitive data in local, state and national databases while maintaining confidentiality, integrity and discretion.
  • Ability to maintain composure in a highly stressful environment involving simultaneous events with multiple interruptions and able to communicate clearly and effectively during emergency situations while exercising good judgment and sound decisions.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the City of Windcrest geography and surrounding areas.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts as assigned, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and willing to work additional hours beyond assigned shifts, sometimes with little or no notice.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to pass the Telecommunicator state licensing exam within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must be able to travel to training sites.
  • U.S. Citizen.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to pass a full background investigation.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Texas drivers’ license.

Requirements:

  • Fully licensed telecommunicator for the State of Texas.
  • One (1) year of experience in a public safety dispatching environment.
  • General knowledge of office procedures such as filing, book-keeping, and records maintenance.
  • Skill in the operation of two-way radios, communications, 911, and computer aided dispatch equipment.
