Communication Specialist I – Dispatcher – 911 Operator

Position Summary:

The incumbent operates 800 MHz radio system, teletype, E911 telephone, PBX telephone system Receives, analyzes, and dispatches messages to radio-equipped units of the Police, Fire and Ambulance Departments and monitors burglar and fire alarms systems with terminals in ECC.

Essential Functions:

1. Takes calls from the public on emergency 911 lines regarding emergency and non –
emergency situations, calls for service and records all pertinent information.
2. Relays information through communications equipment to appropriate personnel in radio-equipped
vehicle responding to the call.
3. Notifies and coordinates with other agencies concerning disasters, task forces and calls as
necessary.
4. Records action taken, equipment assigned, and pertinent times on the Computer Aided Dispatch
system.
5. Monitors radio communications of city government, law enforcement officers, Fire Department,
Ambulance Service and others.
6. Provides pre-arrival instructions to callers requesting medical treatment.
7. Maintains file of telephone numbers and emergency contacts for city businesses.
8. Assures proper operation of recording system.
9. Operates ODOT terminal and TDD to send and receive information, and performs daily upkeep and
minor maintenance of the equipment.
10. Operates the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, searches files and
extracts pertinent information for radio broadcasting.
11. Provides information on vehicle tag, registration numbers, wanted persons and hazardous
materials as requested.
12. Maintains constant status of all duty personnel of Police, Fire and ambulance service.
13. Responsible for testing and activating early warning sirens.
14. Maintains up-to-date street map and index.
15. May assist in training new employees as necessary.
16. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Must successfully pass a data entry test with a minimum of 5500 keystrokes per hour and pass an in-depth background check, polygraph, drug screen and hearing test.
  • Must be able to attend OLETS training and Basic Telecommunications training and pass the required tests with a specified time frame.
  • Previous experience in the operation of a two-way radio, teletype machine, and computer terminal with OLETS certification preferred.
