Chief of Police
Essential Functions:
- The individual will report directly to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs. As the chief law enforcement and emergency management officer of the University, the Director of University Police: manages, supervises, trains, and directs University Police personnel/staff; plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, and evaluates all activities and programs of the department to protect all students/faculty/staff/visitors/University assets, preserve the peace, prevents and suppress crime, protect life and property; identify and apprehend criminal offenders, and enforce regulatory measures.
- Ensures that the department plays a critical role in emergency preparedness and response, enforces state and local laws and University regulations; develops and implements policies/procedures to ensure program effectiveness, establishes clearly defined mission/vision/goals for the department; manages and evaluates departmental budget, reports to include Clergy., purchasing, and patrol vehicle maintenance; serves as liaison to external law enforcement agencies, analyzes crime statistics, compiles/files annual crime report, issues crime/emergency alerts as appropriate; builds/maintains positive relationship with students, staff, faculty, University administration, and local community constituents, oversees security management of university-sponsored Special Events and is available on 24-hour call back for emergencies.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree required (master’s degree preferred) in Criminal Justice, Police Administration, Administration of Justice, Emergency Management, Social Science or related field/area.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, with three (3) years command-level/senior manager experience, two-three years’ experience in higher education setting, and a Certified law enforcement officer in Mississippi.
Preferred Requirements:
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in emergency management operations, including two (2) years of management or supervisory experience.
