Chief of Police
Salary: $121,200.60 – $193,920.97 Annually

Position Summary:
The Chief of Police performs complex advanced protective services work planning, organizing, and directing police operations, ensuring that laws, regulations and procedures are followed, presenting directives and reports, maintaining records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work involves setting policies and goals under the direction of the Town Manager. Departmental supervision is exercised over all personnel within the department.
Essential Functions:
- Performs administrative functions including reviewing contracts, policies, cases, and general order; drafts letters; manages correspondence such as email.
- Attends meetings with department heads and North Virginia chiefs; attends internal staff meetings, community meetings and Transportation Commission (TC) meetings.
- Responds to community issues; responds to requests for information; delegates staff to address issues; provides follow-ups and closure to issues and concerns.
- Recruits and selects department personnel; assigns, directs, trains and inspects the work of staff; rewards, promotes, disciplines, coaches, counsels and evaluates staff performance; makes recommendations on staff schedules; recommends transfers, suspensions, terminations, and demotions.
- Researches and provides discussions on criminal law and case law; provides direction on resource deployment for law enforcement activity.
- Assists staff when short-staffed including covering front desk and attending staff community events.
- Attends mandatory trainings, conferences and leadership seminars as needed or required.
- Executes other job duties as necessary.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree with coursework in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field
- Extensive experience in law enforcement administration and operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Basic Law Enforcement Training certification upon hire.
- May require possession of, or ability to obtain, specific licenses and/or certifications depending on departmental assignment.
- Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for position.
- Valid driver’s license.
