Position Summary:

The Campus Police will be responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the university campus by conducting patrols (both vehicle and foot), responding to alarm calls, and enforcing all federal, state, and local laws, including traffic regulations. The officer will be tasked with making arrests, testifying in court, and providing security during special events, including dignitary protection. Additionally, the officer will be an active member of a community policing team, employing problem-solving strategies to address crime and safety issues on campus.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct patrols on foot and in vehicles to ensure campus safety.
  • Respond promptly to calls for service, alarms, and reports of criminal activity.
  • Enforce federal, state, and local laws, as well as university rules and regulations.
  • Carry out traffic control duties, including the enforcement of parking and traffic rules.
  • Make arrests and prepare necessary documentation and reports.
  • Testify in court when required.
  • Provide security during special events, including protection for dignitaries.
  • Participate in community policing initiatives aimed at crime prevention and safety.
  • Inspect university buildings and facilities for safety or law enforcement concerns.
  • Collaborate with higher authorities on special traffic, safety, or law enforcement concerns.
  • Perform extensive computer work, including entering reports into a database.
  • Execute other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Must possess a Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Certification.
  • Undergo Background Investigation to include fingerprint based criminal history records.
  • Be a citizen of the U.S.

  • Have a high school education.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Undergo a physical examination.
  • Be at least 18 or older.
  • Not have been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony in the Commonwealth.
  • Not have produced a positive result on pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must be a certified Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Law Enforcement Officer or have had the certification within the past 2 years.
  • Must not be “Decertified” by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services
  • Physical capability to lift 50 pounds, walk, run, squat, and bend.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions including holidays, nights, days, and weekends.
