Position Summary:

The Valley County Sheriff’s Office is recruiting for 911 Dispatch Specialists to perform important work in providing aid and assistance to its citizens, visitors, and first responders. We are looking for career-minded individuals who are capable and interested in fielding emergency calls and directing appropriate resources in a professional manner.

Essential Functions:

  • Typical responsibilities include answering emergency and non-emergency calls for service using a multi-line telephone and 911 system. 911 Dispatch Specialists are responsible for fast, efficient, and accurate receiving and processing of calls from a variety of sources, and for dispatching appropriate first responders and emergency personnel out into the field.
  • Work in this position varies from quiet and calm, to busy and sometimes stressful – especially during emergency situations. The 911 Dispatch Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and as such incumbents in this position will work varying shifts (days, nights, and weekends). Additionally, this position requires heavy phone, radio, and computer use, in addition to sitting for long periods of time.

Requirements:

  • Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • General clerical experience.
  • Good communication skills.
  • We are looking for someone who can professionally deal with all types of personalities and remain calm and composed when speaking with individuals under great deals of fear, stress, and anxiety.
  • Prioritization skills and the ability to multi-task are very important as emergency situations can be unpredictable and widely varying.
  • As 911 Dispatch Specialists are first responders in a public safety role, certification through the Idaho Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) Academy will be required within one year of hire.
  • Anyone selected for this position will be enrolled and sent to the POST academy in Meridian to receive specialized training in emergency communications once they have completed their initial on-the-job training.
