University Police Sergeant
Position Summary:
Supervises and coordinates activities of an assigned shift of Police Officers in enforcing university regulations, and city and state laws as they apply to university property by performing the following.
Essential Functions:
- Supervises Police Officers and other UPD personnel on an assigned shift by assigning and reviewing work.
- Functional supervision is exercised over an assigned shift of police officers.
- Answers calls regarding service, illness, accidents, disturbances, crime, or distress and provides necessary assistance or takes appropriate action as needed.
- Conducts investigations of incidents as necessary; collects and preserves physical evidence, protects crime scene, and reports and records all facts of incident.
- Observes public or student gatherings and analyzes developments to determine need for action.
- Will upon request interview and recommend hiring of police officers.
- Provides general assistance and information to students, staff or members of the public.
- Reports infractions of rules to superiors.
- Notifies superior of major crimes or disturbances within area and takes necessary action until arrival of superior.
- Will upon request provide supervision of special events.
- Assists with making routine inspections, maintenance, and testing of campus emergency plans and providing corrective actions, when necessary (i.e. existing safety and fire protection equipment and defibrillators).
- Makes suggestions that would enhance the safety of students and faculty/staff regarding emergency management, hazardous materials or fire protection.
- Assists the Chairperson of the Emergency Preparedness Committee and the Automated External Defibrillator Committee.
- Will perform the duties of Police Officer position when staffing requires.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
- A Master’s degree is preferred.
- Successful completion of the Missouri 600hour police academy required.
- Missouri POST certification required.
- The employee must maintain all the continuing education requirements to remain POST certified as a condition of continued employment.
- Commissioned active officer status required.
- Must have a minimum of three years police experience.
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.
- Four years of college or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Required Certification in NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, & 800.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet university insurance requirements for driving university owned or leased vehicles.
- A safe driving record is required while a driving record without violations / summonses / arrests is preferred.
