Position Summary:

A University Police Officer 1 Transfer will have completed all minimum training requirements as a police officer with police powers as defined in the New York State Criminal Procedure Law, and shall not be on probation or under current disciplinary action. UPO1s are responsible for the detection and prevention of crime and the enforcement of laws, rules and regulations for the protection of persons and property and the general maintenance of peace, order and security. UPO1s will develop and maintain a positive relationship with all segments of the System Administration/SUNY Global campus community in order to obtain cooperation and support in conducting a successful law enforcement program. Typical activities will include crowd control, foot patrols, procedural follow-through, written reports, participation in crime prevention and personal protection programs. UPO1s will also perform additional duties such as attending Board of Trustees meetings at various SUNY campuses.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrol an assigned area by foot to deter criminal activity
  • Respond to incidents, crimes, accidents or disturbances in order to halt crimes in progress and protect life and property
  • Respond to calls for assistance from members of the campus community
  • Respond to fire alarms and medical emergencies
  • Apply first aid/CPR, and summon ambulances when needed
  • Conduct initial investigations; preserve and gather evidence
  • Interview witnesses, complainants and suspects
  • Confer with supervisor to ascertain the nature and severity of a situation
  • Report the results of investigations to supervisor as directed and may testify in court
  • Regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic; stop persons violating vehicle and traffic laws
  • Control crowds, fights and altercations; operates screening devices for prohibited items
  • Controls access into the SUNY Global facility
  • Utilize electronic devices such as personal computer, video surveillance and door access system
  • Prepare shift summary reports, logs, incident and investigative reports, and records
  • May deliver a variety of in-service training and or community related programs
  • Coordinate with NYPD for assistance in certain emergency situations

Requirements:

  • Currently holding a University Police Officer 1 title
  • Possess a valid NYS driver’s license.
  • Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. May vary depending on operating needs.
