Sergeant – Sheriff
Salary: $61,492.00 – $95,905.00 Annually
Essential Functions:
- Demonstrates positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public
- Acts as a first-line supervisor over the Corrections Officers and ensure the officers’ activities are conducted in conformance with department rules and regulations
- Responsible for the operations of the Correctional Facility
- Responsible for the care and control of inmates within the facility, including Intake procedures, disturbance control, fire control, suicide watch, inmate medical needs and law enforcement related issues
- Transports of inmates to various locations
- Ensures all computer data entries are correct
- Ensures all inmate meal are within guidelines of the policy
- Responsible for daily routine of feeding inmates, ensuring hygiene needs are complied with, laundry, cleaning, etc.
- Responsible for maintenance/janitorial needs of the facility
- Ensures all equipment within the facility is in good working order; requesting repairs or replacement as necessary
- Supervises the inventory and ordering of food, clothing, personal hygiene items and supplies
- Ensures all pre-sentenced inmates are arraigned per state statutes
- Responsible for timely release of inmates
- Responsible for conducting vehicle inspections and reporting deficiencies
- Supervises inmate work detail
- Ensures inmate files and records are properly maintained
- Ensures the safety and security of the Correctional Facility is maintained at all times
- Acts as the senior Field Training Officer (FTO) for the Corrections Division and update the Training Supervisor of changes as needed
- Adheres to all policies, procedures, guidelines and directives of the office on an ongoing basis
- Assigns tasks to the Corrections Deputies, set time frames for completion and follow-up on the tasks given
- Reviews inmate complaints and problems. Handles inmate grievances by following the office policy and procedures
- Ensures staff have the necessary resources available to perform their assigned duties
- Verifies the authenticity and legality of court documents, detainers, warrants, etc. Clearing of the inmate count at shift change and other times, as necessary
- Verifies and approves Meal Count forms
- Collects DOC, ACA, CALEA, NCCHC proofs of compliance and routing same to the Accreditation Manager
- Reviews incident reports generated on a daily basis
- Assures assigned post Policy and Procedure manuals are up-to-date
- Researches and responds to inmate complaints of lost or mishandled property
- Responsible for the supervision of correctional officers.
- Makes sure that all the daily maintenance and issuing of supplies are conducted and completed.
- Conducts rounds on each floor for supervision of staff and inmates
- Assists in inmate movement.
- Makes sure policies and procedures are carried out by staff on duty as well as conduct security rounds.
- Makes sure that his/her shift and the relieving shift is properly briefed.
- Makes decision about placement of inmates and reports to the Shift Lieutenant.
- Collaborates in daily briefing of staff.
- Supervises the care of inmate’s property and money
- Handles inmate correspondences and complaints or refers to appropriate division.
- Supervises the special visitation of inmates by legal counsel, clergy or other parties.
- Conducts security checks and searches of the entire facility on a regular basis.
- Enforces facility rules, regulations and procedures.
- Ensures the daily cleanliness and maintenance of the facility
- Prepares subordinate personnel performance evaluations
- Ensures classification housing movements are current and accurate
- Writes relevant incident reports
- Supervises the completion of forms
- Documents maintenance problems
- Confers with and answer inmate questions concerning rules, regulations, activities and their incarceration
- Conducts uniform/weapons inspections and documenting results
- Meets acceptable attendance requirements at all times
- Protects confidential information by preventing unauthorized release, both verbal and/or writing
- Performs all duties of a corrections deputy when needed
- Disseminates information as it is given by the Department’s Administration
- Completes the Job Performance Evaluations on all deputies as required by policy
- Commends and/or follow disciplinary actions for all deputy sheriffs, as needed
- Follows all Federal, State and Local laws
- Performs any other tasks as required.
Requirements:
- Must currently be serving as a DEPUTY or MASTER DEPUTY or a SERGEANT
- Minimum length of service necessary to be considered for selection is THREE (3) consecutive years in the correctional field.
- The THIRD (3rd) year of experience can be SUBSTITUTED with one of the following:
- A Bachelor’s Degree, OR
- An Associate Degree (Criminal Justice), OR
- TWO (2) years of Law Enforcement experience, OR
- TWO (2) years of Corrections experience, OR
- FOUR (4) years of Military experience (Honorable Discharge)
- Must be in good physical condition and pass the Agility & Written Tests
- Must possess good oral and written communication skills
- Must possess excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and record-keeping skills
- Must be willing to accept an assignment to any shift or division
