Position Summary:

The Curry College Public Safety Department is tasked with providing a safe and secure environment for our community members to live, learn, and work. Our department adopts a hybrid model with fully sworn and certified Campus Police Officers that work in conjunction with non-sworn civilian Public Safety Officers. Together we operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Essential Functions:

  1. The Sergeant will manage the patrol operations of their shift to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. The Sergeant will enforce departmental orders, applicable state laws, and ensure compliance with all personnel.
  2. The Sergeant will conduct a shift change roll call to ensure all staff are properly informed and aware of ongoing incidents, recent crime trends, new policies and procedures, and any other relevant information.
  3. The Sergeant will approve all incident reports forwarded to them at the conclusion of their shift and ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors, that the information contained in the report is accurate, and then forward the report as necessary through the Chain of Command.
  4. The Sergeant will be able to successfully address a broad range of issues using sound judgement and discretion, ensuring effective crisis management and conflict resolution. The Sergeant may be required to respond to active and ongoing incidents to provide clarity and direction for the staff they oversee.
  5. The Sergeant will serve as a positive role model and mentor to both subordinates and peers, which will foster a culture of professionalism and ethical behavior.
  6. The Sergeant at times may need to respond safely and rapidly to emergency calls for police service such as reports of crimes in progress; suspected criminal activity; medical emergencies; environmental emergencies; fires, fire alarms; motion and intrusion alarms; and accidents, etc. Render aid and assistance to victims, advising them of available services, and making appropriate referrals to available resources. Conduct thorough initial investigations of incidents and follow up investigations assigned. Assist Massachusetts State Police, Milton Police, Milton Fire, Coastal EMS, and other public safety agencies as requested and/or required.
  7. Knowledge of police practices and investigative procedures of a comprehensive campus law enforcement program. Knowledge of and ability to interpret, apply, and make decisions in accordance with pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  8. Operate specialized law enforcement equipment including specialized police vehicles, radios, and video systems.
  9. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and furthering a welcoming work environment.
  10. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; and respond well to questions.

Requirements:

  • The candidate must be authorized to work in the United States
  • The candidate must possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • The candidate must be at least 21 years of age
  • The candidate must have an active Massachusetts Driver’s License
  • For a candidate to be sworn law enforcement, they must be eligible for appointment as Special State Police Officer in accordance with M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63 and able to maintain their eligibility for the duration of their employment
  • For a candidate to be sworn law enforcement, they must be eligible for appointment as a Norfolk County Deputy Sheriff and maintain their eligibility for the duration of their employment
  • For a candidate to be sworn law enforcement, they must be eligible for the Massachusetts Peace Officers Standards and Training Certification (POSTC) and remain a Certified Officer for the duration of their employment
  • For a candidate to be sworn law enforcement, they must have completed an MPTC Recruit Officer Course from an MPTC approved or authorized academy or obtained a permanent exemption from the MPTC
  • The candidate must have at least 3 years of verified campus law enforcement or campus public safety experience
  • The candidate will be required to pass a comprehensive background investigation, a pre-employment psychological examination, and a pre-employment medical exam

Preferred Requirements:

  • The candidate would have previous experience as a supervisor in a campus law enforcement or campus public safety setting
  • The candidate would have an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field from an accredited institution
  • Sworn candidates would have obtained their POST Certification by having completed a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Basic Recruit Officer Academy and/or obtained a permanent exemption from the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) that has been approved and accepted by the Massachusetts State Police
  • The candidate would have graduated from or completed a law enforcement supervisory or management program such as the MPTC First Line Supervisor Course
  • The candidate would have active certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Stop the Bleed
  • The candidate would have campus law enforcement experience
  • The candidate would have knowledge of CAD and report writing operating systems
  • The candidate would have knowledge of police procedures and practices, the laws of arrest and criminal procedures
  • The candidate would have a strong ability to understand the dynamics and culture of working at an institution of higher learning
