Sergeant Police
Salary: $64,770
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Assistant Police Chief, the Police Sergeant is responsible for performing police patrols, investigations, traffic regulation, and related law enforcement activities.
Essential Functions:
- Trains officers on the policies and procedures specific to a department or campus; assists officers in selecting and requesting training courses
- Works on assigned, rotating shifts performing security patrols, traffic control, investigations, rendering first aid, and arrests persons involved in crimes or misconduct; carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, and local laws or ordinances, and College District policies and procedures
- Investigates criminal law violations occurring within the College limits, obtaining evidence, compiling information regarding these crimes, preparing cases for filing of charges, testifying in court, and related activities
- Maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedent; responds to emergency radio calls and requests ambulances and other law enforcement or emergency agencies when necessary
- Prepares a variety of reports and records including those related to daily logs, investigations, field procedures, evidence, and traffic incidents
- Contacts municipal law enforcement agencies who have concurrent jurisdiction to exchange information, file charges, and transfer custody of suspects when necessary
- Undertakes community-oriented police work, maintaining contact with the general public, court officials, and other College officials
- Maintains contact with supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and provides general information about department activities; Coordinates activities with supervisors or other departments as needed and obtains guidance from College administration regarding cases, policies, and procedures
- Maintains departmental equipment, supplies, facilities, firearms, and vehicles
Requirements:
- At least 21 years old
- United States citizen or per 88th leg., R.S., Ch. 1049 (S.B. 252) Sec. 3, a Legal Permanent Resident of the United States who:
- Is an honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces of the United States with at least 2 two years of service before before discharge; and
- Presents evidence satisfactory to the commission (TCOLE) that the person has applied for United States citizenship
- High school diploma or GED
- Two (2) years’ working experience related to the Essential Performance Requirements
- Intermediate Peace Officer Proficiency Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
- Valid Texas Driver’s License
- Employment is contingent upon a candidate’s successful criminal background investigation results that provide no evidence of
- Felony convictions
- Class B misdemeanor convictions or court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offences above the grade of class B within the last ten (10) years
- Convictions, probations, or deferred dispositions for family violence
- DWI/DUI convictions within the last ten (10) years
Preferred Requirements:
- Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Business Management, or related field
- Experience working in a campus police department
