Position Summary:
This position is responsible for supervising a shift of police and civilian employees in the satisfactory, productive performance of assigned duties. Supervises the Department’s administrative operations during non-regular working hours including criminal investigations, traffic and parking operations, and other related law enforcement services. Responsible for actively participating in all related law enforcement services. Responsible for actively participating in all phases of Community oriented policing, including individual or team projects. Staff in this position are considered critical personnel.
Essential Functions:
- Supervises an assigned shift, dispatch as necessary, and participates in the enforcement of all Federal and State laws and local ordinances within the jurisdiction of the State University System. Provides for traffic and parking enforcement, as well as, vehicular registration/regulation information. Networks with other supervisors within the department and in the State University System. Ensures open lines of communication through the chain of command.
- Supervises and assists as necessary in the investigation of crimes, interviewing of victims and witnesses, interrogation of suspects and the location and preservation of evidence, pending the assumption of command by other proper authority. Utilizes computers for crime analysis information.
- Supervises and/or provides on-the-job training on the assigned shift, which serves to enhance the delivery of police services to the Campus Community and aids in the professional development of subordinate personnel. Assist with monitoring of Field Training Officer/Officer Trainee when on shift. Develops training lesson plans and provides formal training as needed to maintain officer proficiency in high risk and other areas of expertise. Recommends changes to existing policies, provides input on new policies, and implements them with subordinates.
Supervises the deployment and scheduling of patrol personnel assigned to shift; inspects all personnel and equipment required in job performance to insure serviceability; investigates cause and deficient equipment and reports to appropriate authority. Demonstrates a continuous effort to improve operations and to provide a high level of customer service. - Evaluates in writing the performance of subordinates; reviews and approves police reports, timesheets and other documents; counsels shift members on a regular basis; acknowledges and commends outstanding performance by subordinates; conducts thorough investigations of complaints against officers and reports in writing all results; initiates disciplinary measures as required. Utilizes the department computer network for supervisory statistical information. Provides recommendations to appropriate authority in various areas such as traffic safety, physical security, training and budget.
Requirements:
- Meet the requirements of Chapter 943, Florida Statutes and have three years of sworn law enforcement, or sworn investigative experience.
- For promotional appointments successful completion of the current promotional process.
- Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Preferred Requirements:
- Individual with prior Law Enforcement Experience, and a two-year college degree or equivalent.
- Experience in leadership positions, particularly with Field Training, Exceptional Verbal and Written Communication, lack of disciplinary issues, a proven record of good attendance, punctuality, and conduct.
