Sergeant I – III
Position Summary:
The main purpose of the NC State University Sergeant position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff and visitors of North Carolina State University through law enforcement and crime prevention. The selected candidate(s) will patrol campus and investigate complaints and violations of State laws and local ordinances. This person also develops and implements preventative patrol techniques and performs specialized duties to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices. This person works with supervised employees to develop their career goals and implement strategies to achieve them.
Essential Functions:
- Sergeant I: Positions at this level are fully functioning supervisors with a minimum of 4 years of experience in law enforcement, have attained an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate, or out of state equivalent, and have at least an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit).
- Sergeant II: Positions at this level are fully functioning officers with a minimum of 3 years of experience as a Sergeant (7 years total in law enforcement) or equivalent experience at another UNC System law enforcement agency, have attained an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate, and have at least an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit).
- Sergeant III: Positions at this level are fully functioning officers with a minimum of 6 years of experience as a Sergeant (10 years total in law enforcement) or equivalent experience at another UNC System law enforcement agency, have attained an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate, and have at least an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit).
Requirements:
- Must possess a minimum of an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience.
- Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out of state lateral hires is also required.
- Candidates must meet the minimum State standards for employment.
- Candidates must successfully complete a department orientation course, a department field training program during probationary period, and must satisfactorily complete the state mandated probationary period.
- The selected candidate must possess good oral and written communication skills and deal with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system in a professional manner.
- The candidate(s) for this position will be considered a ‘MANDATORY’ Employee as defined in University Regulation 04-20-07.
Preferred Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher education level
- Experience in a higher education public safety or campus police department, especially in a CALEA or IACLEA accredited agency.
- 80 percent score on annual firearms qualification
