School Police Officer
Position Summary:
To provide enhanced law enforcement services in a school setting while developing positive relationships between students, faculty, and the school community. Be a visible presence to deter crimes against students, staff, and property. Work with local agencies to enhance school safety and emergency preparedness.
Essential Functions:
- Provide law enforcement and police services to the school district, on school grounds, and in areas adjacent to the school. Investigate allegations of criminal incidents. Enforce state and local laws and ordinances.
- Make appropriate referrals to juvenile authorities or other governmental agencies.
- Patrol the school campus and grounds to prevent disruptive or illegal actions and to promote a safe and healthy learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.
- Control and monitor traffic patterns on school district grounds, monitor and enforce parking rules and regulations, including issuing warnings and citations, and maintain appropriate documentation.
- Take appropriate and timely action in the event of emergencies.
- Act as a mentor and role model for students by promoting responsible decision-making and positive behavior.
- Participate as a member of building-level committees as necessary and required by the School Police Chief.
- Assist in building emergency training for school personnel by conducting active shooter drills, fire drills and other emergency preparedness drills.
- Build positive relationships with school staff, students, and parent groups.
- Work to prevent juvenile delinquency through close contact and positive relationships with students.
- Monitor local crime statistics and trends and work with local police officers and students to design crime prevention strategies.
Requirements:
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Must have completed a basic police training certification course in conformity with the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission under 53 Pa. C.S. Ch.21 Subch. D (relating to Municipal Police Education and Training) or has graduated from the PA State Police Academy, has been employed as a State Trooper with the PA StatePolice, and has separated from that service in good standing.
- Minimum 10 years of active police experience required preferably in a school setting.
- Must have completed, or be willing to complete, the Basic School Resource Officer course offered by the National Association of School Resource Officers or an Act 67 equivalent course of instruction.
- Current Act 134, Act 151, and FBI Clearances as required by Pennsylvania law and any other clearances that may be required by law or by the School District.
