Public Safety Officer 3
Salary: $39,000-$43,000
Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Public Safety, investigates crimes and accidents, protects property, facilities, citizens, staff and students by applying pro-active law enforcement techniques.
Essential Functions:
- Patrol campus areas
- Direct, monitor, and control pedestrian and vehicle traffic
- Enforce traffic and parking violations as necessary
- Investigate suspected crimes, reports findings, and arrest suspected individuals
- Investigate motor vehicle accidents involving persons or property, reports probable cause of accidents, and pursues appropriate course of action
- Prepare reports, case files, and provides testimony in court or legal proceedings
- Operate and maintain all assigned law enforcement equipment
- Maintain POST certification by successfully completing all POST mandated required Annual In-Service training requirements
- Meet local area and institutional requirements related to bonding, arrest authority and lethal/less-lethal weapons use
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Meet the requirements of a Certified Police Officer, per TCA§ 38-8-107, and be certified by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST)
- Must be a Tennessee POST certified law enforcement officer and maintain this certification throughout term of employment
- Meet the requirements of TCA§38-8-106, Qualifications of Police Officers
- Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Be a high school graduate or possess equivalency
- Not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances
- Not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States
- Have his/her fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation
- Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician
- Have a good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation conducted by the employing agency; and
- Be free of all apparent mental disorders as described in the Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III) of the American Psychiatric Association. Applicants must be certified as meeting these criteria by a qualified professional in the psychiatric or psychological fields
- Must possess a valid Tennessee Operator License as issued by the Tennessee Department of Public Safety
Preferred Requirements:
- Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from a regionally accredited institution
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a POST Certified Law Enforcement officer. Possess and maintain current Tennessee POST certification as a law enforcement officer.
