Public Safety Dispatcher II (LATERAL)
Salary: $88,497.13 – $106,919.43 Annually
Position Summary:
Under general supervision, to receive emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatch personnel and equipment for law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical service personnel utilizing a computer-aided dispatch system; to maintain records relative to the communications operation; and to perform various other support duties as required.
Essential Functions:
- Receive emergency 911 and non-emergency telephone calls; evaluate the nature of the call; if necessary, enter information received in the computer-aided dispatch system or manual dispatch card system; evaluate requests for validity, priority and type of response required; dispatch emergency services units in law enforcement, fire, and/or paramedic services in accordance with established procedures.
- Monitor multiple public safety and related radio frequencies and respond to emergencies that may require dispatch services; operate a variety of communications equipment.
- Assist callers in methods of dealing with medical emergencies prior to the arrival of dispatched emergency personnel; relay information and/or instructions to field personnel.
- Operate a computer, telephone and radio console, providing information to the public and agencies concerned with emergency operations; requesting and obtaining information on persons, vehicles and property.
- Access and relay warrant information; answer the telephone for business and non-emergency calls; refers calls to appropriate agencies; provides general information to the public.
- Maintain and prepare accurate records and logs of messages received and dispatched.
- May serve as shift supervisor in supervisor’s absence; may assist in the training of Public Safety Dispatcher I’s.
Requirements:
- One year of public safety dispatching experience comprised of law enforcement or fire service dispatch responsibilities.
- Possession of a P.O.S.T. Dispatch Training Certificate and experience with emergency medical dispatching and computer-aided dispatching are preferred.
- Incumbents must be willing to work irregular and/or rotating shifts, holidays, overtime and weekends as required.
- Incumbents must successfully complete Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) training within six months of the date of hire. Incumbents hired after April 3, 1989 must obtain a P.O.S.T. Dispatch Training Certificate within the first year of employment.
