Police Sergeant

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, supervises officers in the Traffic Safety Unit. Checks incident reports, complaint reports and collision reports for completeness and accuracy. Answers calls for service. Writes reports and answers traffic related questions from the public. Sets up speed trailer and speed spy in problem areas and collects data. Reports to the Operations Captain.

Essential Functions:

• Supervises department employees which involves such duties as instructing, assigning and reviewing work, maintaining standards, acting on employee problems, selecting new employees, appraising employee performance, recommending promotions, discipline, and termination and salary increases.
• Supervises all police activities; responds to emergency police situations; drives patrol vehicle or walks to observe illegal or suspicious activities.
• Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints; issues citations for traffic violations; investigates traffic collisions.
• Confronts and arrests violent suspects; engages in foot pursuits.
• Ensures traffic control at schools.
• Serves warrants, makes arrests and testifies in court.
• Provides police escorts; directs traffic; performs residential and commercial property checks.
• Fills out and reviews arrest records and prisoner transports.
• Reports unsafe road conditions and properties.
• Prepares detailed reports on activities, assignments, incidents, complaints and collisions.
• Participates in in-service training.
• Attends and testifies in court.
• Conducts training classes in house and for other agencies.

Requirements:

• Requires a high school diploma supplemented by a minimum of 2 years of experience in the police field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• May require the following licenses/certifications: Basic Law Enforcement Officer, Basic Instructor, OC Instructor and Taser Instructor.
• Must possess a valid SC driver’s license.
