Police Sergeant
Salary: $52.20 – $60.74 Hourly
Essential Functions:
- Act as a team supervisor, assuming command at police incidents and providing supervision to all employees and police volunteers as necessary
- Supervise, schedule, assign, instruct, and evaluate subordinates to ensure adherence to law and applicable department policies and procedures
- Review the work performance of subordinates on a continuous basis and conduct formal performance evaluations on assigned personnel
- Accept, document, and process citizen complaints regarding employee conduct or department procedures
- Promote positive police-community relationships
- Review reports and other paperwork to stay current on police activities and recommend necessary changes in procedures and practices
- Conduct periodic appearance and equipment checks of assigned personnel
- Make training, discipline, and performance reward recommendations on assigned personnel
- Provide on-the-job training for employees as needed
- Maintain individual police skills
- Stay current on law enforcement trends and changes in related laws and ordinances
- Supervise proper utilization and maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment, arranging for repair and replacement as required
- Conduct or direct the booking of persons for various violations
- Demonstrate by personal example the desired standard of conduct and work performance for all officers and other personnel
- Inspect police facilities for proper security and maintenance
- Promotes and guides employees in problem-solving initiatives
- Disciplines subordinates consistent with department policy, procedure, the City personnel code, and the labor agreement in effect between the City and recognized labor groups
- Compliance with the minimum standards as promulgated by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training Board to include current POST licensure, therefore having primary duties as a police officer
- Performs other duties and assumes responsibilities as apparent or assigned
Requirements:
- Total of five consecutive years as a police officer.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Hold a license issued by or eligible to be licensed by the Minnesota Police Officers Standards and Training Board (P.O.S.T.) by the time of appointment.
- Must meet all state-mandated requirements and local policies such as a physical examination, psychological exam, and criminal background check.
- Leadership training to include, but not limited to, the MCPA Leadership Academy
- Strong investigative skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field
