Police Sergeant
Position Summary:
Under general supervision of the Chief of Police directly supervises patrol officers, performs a variety of administrative tasks including but not limited to compiling data, administrating and recommending discipline, scheduling of officers, serves as the commander of the field training officer program, investigates citizen complaints, and serves as Chief Executive of the police department in the absence of the Chief of Police.
Essential Functions:
- Supervises police officers on a daily basis, schedules officers for regular duty and special events, completes and approves officers time sheets, approves annual and sick leave, as necessary administers discipline up to verbal reprimands, and recommends harsher discipline to the Chief of Police, reviews reports, daily logs and other police documents and approves the same.
- Compiles data on a monthly basis, submits a monthly narrative report on patrol officer activities and other areas in the department, inspects and directs service of vehicles and other equipment, reviews develops and approves forms, serves as training officer on all training and maintains training and firearms qualification files, ensures training standards are complied with. As Field Training Officer Commander ensures the training officers are complying with the training schedule and evaluations as directed, ensures the completion of an annual evidence inventory.
- Ensures compliance with policy and procedures of the department drafts and reviews policy & procedure with the Chief of Police. Investigates internal matters including officers misconduct, improper handling of equipment, vehicle equipment damage and violations of policy. Listens to and
prepares investigative reports on citizens’ complaints. Conducts periodic inspections of officers, completed reports and equipment. - Performs community oriented policing activities to include, training of officers and community residents, makes presentations to civic groups, school children, citizens and other service providers.
- Organizes and monitors neighborhood watch and other crime prevention programs. Oversees and provides instruction to youth programs, and interacts with other tribal, local state and federal agencies to ensure enhancement of the COPS program.
- Performs patrol officer functions as necessary to include, vehicle traffic enforcement, taking reports, making arrests, transportation of prisoners, completion of daily log, vehicle maintenance, issuing citations, testifying in tribal, federal and state courts, conducts investigations of all incidents requiring follow-up, enforces all tribal, state and federal laws when appropriate. And performs any other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
Requirements:
- Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, graduation from a police academy , Nevada POST certification
- Knowledge of basic supervisory processes particularly as it applies to the legal due process rights of employees.
- Knowledge and skill on evidence preservation, processing and collection.
- Knowledge on administrative responsibilities of a front line supervisor.
- Knowledge on basic data collection and analysis.
- Knowledge of standard office equipment, computer operations, specifically words processing Microsoft Word 6.0.
- Public speaking skills and the ability to prepare verbal and visual presentations.
- Skilled in the preparation and presentation of lessons and plans.
- Must be able to pass physical examination to meet physical demands of the position.
- Indian preference applies.
