Police or Correctional Officer
Salary: $20.21 – per hour.
Position Summary:
The purpose of this full-time classification, under general supervision of a Sworn Police Supervisor, or other designated departmental official, is to perform functions associated with the supervision, care, custody, and control, of prisoners. Duties include an element of personal danger and exposure, adverse weather conditions and transporting prisoners. Incumbents perform duties in accordance with Florida State Statutes and established departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. Incumbents must be Florida certified Correctional Officers or Law Enforcement Officers.
Essential Functions:
- Maintain supervision, care, custody and control of prisoners from an arresting officer and transport them safely to the Daytona Beach Police Department Holding Cell, Volusia County Branch Jail, Halifax Hospital and any other authorized designated location.
- Complete prisoner searches to prevent the introduction of weapons and/or contraband items into the transport vehicles and facilities and secures the prisoner’s personal property.
- Monitors activities and behaviors of prisoners during transport and during custody.
- Maintain proper security of prisoners being transported; prepares, maintains, reviews, and processes various reports to include documentation such as booking documents, transport logs, and transport van logs, etc., and ensures that all transportation paperwork is completed accurately and signed by the appropriate authority. Institutes proper restraints as appropriate for prisoner’s custody; check transportation vehicles daily.
- Remove prisoners from holding cells or transport vans in accordance with established policy & directives and maintain all required logs/records of the Prisoner Transfer Facility.
- Conducts inventory checks on Department equipment.
- Conducts and documents inventory checks on prisoner property.
- Testifies in civil and criminal court proceedings and gives depositions.
Requirements:
- Candidates must be a U.S. Citizen between 19 and 65 (applicant must be 19 before State Certification to work as a Police Officer will be granted).
- Must have a High School Diploma, GED or acceptable equivalency diploma (USAFI not accepted).
- Corrected visual acuity at least 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other.
- Candidates must possess a current, valid Florida Law Enforcement or Florida Correctional Officer Certificate of Completion and passing grade results OR Certificate of Compliance of the Minimum Standards as set forth by the Florida Police Standards Council to be employed.
- Certificates of Completion may be obtained through most Florida Community Colleges.
