Seeking candidates to send to a P.O.S.T. academy August, 2021. Upon successful completion of the P.O.S.T. Academy and written P.O.S.T. test, pay will be adjusted to a Step 2 Police Officer.

While attending the P.O.S.T. Academy the schedule will be set by the academy to include any additional training and homework that may be required outside of classroom hours. After the successful completion of the academy, work is scheduled on a rotating shift basis (Days, Swings, Graveyards) Sunday through Saturday to include holidays, weekends and overtime.

Responsibilities:

  • May perform special project assignment duties in patrol, investigation, crime prevention, court security, or community affairs units as assigned. Responds to requests for assistance from the public, fellow officers, fire department, ambulance services, and other police agencies. Renders first-aid assistance as necessary. Secures crime scenes, conducts evidence searches; interviews complainants, witnesses, and suspects. When assigned as an investigator, performs compre­hen­sive initial and follow-up investigation of misdemeanors and felonies as assigned. Apprehends suspects and testifies in court as appropriate. Performs traffic control operations: directs traffic, assists motorists, issues citations, investigates accidents involving motor vehicles, testifies in court as necessary. Responds to calls of a non-criminal nature such as barking dogs, family distur­bances, and abandoned vehicles. Identifies neighborhood problems and develops strategies for solutions. Performs related duties as required.
  • Get acquainted with people in an assigned beat; identify problems; attend meetings; teach classes; advise children (in school and on the street); and improves community relations. Communicate verbally and effectively by listening to people and by giving information, directions, and commands. Solve law enforcement and community service problems. Exercise independent judgment within legal guidelines, to determine when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest and when force may be used and to what degree. Communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications, often under adverse conditions such as siren usage and high speed vehicle operations.
  • Effect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints. Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time. Climb over obstacles; climb through openings; jump down from elevated surfaces; jump over obstacles, ditches, and streams; and crawl in confined areas to pursue, search, investigate, and/or rescue. Conduct searches of buildings and large outdoor areas which may involve walking, running and/or standing for long periods of time and which requires the ability to distinguish color and perceive shapes. Enter and exit vehicles quickly to perform rescue operations, pursue a suspect, or answer an emergency call. Pursue fleeing suspects on foot both day and night in unfamiliar terrain.

Qualifications:

Training: High school graduate or GED equivalent supplemented with 60 semester hours from a college or university accredited by the North Central Association or a similar regional accrediting association. Or two years of active military service and 30 semester hours from an accredited college or university. Bachelor's degree is preferred. The department will sponsor selected candidate/s to a state certified P.O.S.T. academy.

Experience: None.

Necessary Applicant Traits: Cannot have been convicted of a felony or a disqualifying misdemeanor involving moral turpitude. Must possess and maintain valid driver's license with the ability to obtain a valid Colorado driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment; must be at least 21 years of age. Must be able to successfully pass the POST academy and FTO program, obtain valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR certifications within 12 months of hire and maintain for continued employment. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer tests in addition to the interview(s): polygraph or CVSA, physical agility obstacle course, typing/data entry test, background examination, driving records check, medical examination, psychological examination, drug screening and fingerprint check through CBI/FBI. Ability to meet Department's physical standards.
