Police Officer (Laterals)
Salary: $104,528.16 – $129,865.56 Annually
Position Summary:
The City of Beverly Hills Police Department is seeking highly motivated and qualified candidates for the position of Lateral Police Officer. The lateral Police Officer perform duties to protect life and property within the city. Maintains law and order and respond to emergency calls. May patrol the city enforcing the criminal and traffic laws of the city, state and nation. Performs background investigations, or perform training duties.
Essential Functions:
- Patrol assigned areas of the City by car, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot to preserve law and order, discover and prevent commission of crimes, and to enforce traffic, criminal, and other laws and ordinances; maintain awareness of and remain alert for wanted persons, known criminals, stolen vehicles, missing persons, traffic violators, and crimes in progress; issue warnings and citations.
- Respond to calls for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of traffic, criminal and other laws and ordinances, general public service calls, and complaints including those involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony crimes, domestic disturbances, health and safety code and local ordinance violations, civil complaints, and related incidents; respond to and provide assistance at a variety of public service type calls that are non-criminal in nature.
- Conduct initial and follow-up investigations at scenes of incidents to which summoned or incidents observed; determine what crime, if any, has been committed; collect, preserve, process, photograph, and book evidence; locate and interview victims and witnesses; identify and interview persons suspected of criminal activity.
- Prepare and serve search and arrest warrants; apprehend and arrest offenders for crimes committed under federal, state, and local laws and codes; control and mitigate people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations.
- Direct traffic at fires, special events, and other emergency situations; provide traffic and crowd control at parades, festivals, riots, and other events.
- Serve as a liaison and public relations officer for the assigned area; establish and preserve good relationships with the general public; may develop reliable informants and provide intelligence information to divisional and/or departmental personnel.
- Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses; may respond to requests for assistance from agencies outside the City for mutual aid requests.
- Perform a variety of administrative and other types of duties in support of law enforcement services, programs, and activities; attend meetings; maintain and calibrate specialized equipment.
- Prepare a variety of reports including those on shift activities, operations, crime and incidents, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed; prepare investigative reports and log case update information.
- Testify in juvenile, civil, traffic, municipal, and criminal courts, and parole and DMV hearings; prepare and present evidence; respond to mandatory court calls during irregular hours.
- Assume responsibility for the care and custody of detained adults and juveniles, assist in receiving, searching, booking, fingerprinting, and transporting inmates.
- Conduct property and building checks for burglary and other criminal activity.
- Administer CPR, NARCAN, and first aid in cases of medical emergencies.
- Conduct chemical, drug, and alcohol testing of persons for impairment.
- Respond to questions, concerns, and requests for service from the general public; answer questions from the public concerning local and state laws, procedures, and activities of the department; provide information as appropriate and resolve complaints.
- Develop and maintain positive relations with residents, business owners, schools, and other members of the community; conduct community outreach and attend public meetings, events, and functions to build trust and strengthen relations; and work collaboratively with the community to address community concerns.
- Stay abreast of changes in the Department’s Policy and Procedures Manual; assure performance of assigned duties reflect adherence to the Manual.
- Participate in continuous training to develop, maintain, and enhance law enforcement skills and maintain required certificates.
- Depending on departmental needs, may serve in a special assignment. Examples of special assignments include, but are not limited to the following: Motor Officer, Detective, School Resource Officer, Canine Handler, Traffic Officer, Community Relations Officer, Field Training Officer, etc.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college.
- At least 45 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) from an accredited college at the time of testing OR at least 36 semester units (or 54 quarter units) from an accredited college at the time of application. If hired, incumbent must commit to obtain an Associate’s degree OR complete at least 60 semester units (or 90 quarter units) no later than one year following the end of the probationary period.
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
- Possession of First Aid and CPR certificates.
- Possession of Penal Code 832 Arrest and Firearms Training certificate.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certificate upon completion of probation, but no later than 24 months after appointment.
- Must meet any other criteria mandated by the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST).
- Must be a citizen of the United States of America, or a lawful permanent resident, at the time of application.
- Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
- Must be able to meet physical standards.
- Must meet psychological and background standards that reflect the following:
- Must be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition, including bias against race or ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, disability, or sexual orientation that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.
- Must be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain required P.O.S.T. certification and maintain firearms qualification.
- Must be willing to work irregular hours including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and over-time as needed.
- Must be available for call-back and automatic return to work with a reasonable response time (within the amount of time as if traveling from residence) during off-duty hours for major emergencies, disasters, critical incidents, and as otherwise required.
