Position Summary & Scope
Apply to join our team at any time during the year if you’ve been a police officer for at least one year and have MN POST licensing in good standing or are eligible for POST. A signing bonus of up to $10k, elevated starting pay, and front-loaded vacation and sick time will be available for all experienced officers. Prior law enforcement experience will be considered for promotional and specialty opportunities. This position is classified as entry-level.
Job Summary:
The key responsibilities of a Police Officer are to enforce State and Federal laws and City ordinances; conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of incidents, traffic accidents and crimes; protect life and property; prevent crime; promote community relations; provide the highest level of service to residents and visitors; and to perform all duties within the guidelines, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations set forth by the Department.
Scope of Responsibility:
The Police Officer works independently, with limited supervision and direction, under the assigned Sergeant and has the primary responsibility to respond to calls for law enforcement. This position functions as the City’s first line of contact with the public regarding Police calls for service. The Officer position exercises considerable knowledge of state and federally laws and prescribed Policing standards and procedures requiring analysis, critical troubleshooting; the use of established practical and sound judgment, and is responsible for all related report writing.
This position frequently interacts within the department and the community to present detailed or technical information, gather input and feedback, provide explanations or responses, and performs advanced troubleshooting or analysis using judgment to select from multiple known alternatives. Communication in person, on the phone and across the internet requires the highest degree of tact, courtesy, and sound judgment that is necessary to serve the public. Relationships and successes affecting individual customers and public reputation are affected by this position.

Minimum job requirements are one year as a licensed law enforcement officer and successful completion of all steps necessary for MN P.O.S.T. licensing. Incumbent must be a United States citizen with no felony convictions in any state; possess the physical and psychological capabilities necessary to function in a law enforcement capacity and communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing; and successfully meet and maintain all requirements for state licensing and possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license in any state contiguous to Minnesota and be insurable. A Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement or Related Field is desirable.
