Position Summary:

Under general supervision of the Chief of Police assists with the day-to-day operations of the Tribal Police Department. Performs administrative tasks incidental to the position. Provides supervision to Police Sergeants, Police Investigator, Police Officers and Police Secretary. Serves as the Chief Executive of the police department in the absence of the Chief of Police.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with the administrative operation of the department by providing assistance in preparing an annual plan and budget, including detailed activities and objectives. Ensures policies and procedures are maintained and updated as necessary.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for the Chief of Police, and other departments as requested. Prepares other reports and data as requested by a proper authority.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of records and compliance with Tribal, State, and Federal regulations and guidelines, including vehicle and equipment maintenance. Additionally, ensures all police personnel comply with the guidelines regarding confidentiality and security of sensitive documents.
  • Ensures that proper supervision of subordinate personnel is maintained and that all initial hire and annual performance evaluations are completed accurately and timely for all personnel. When necessary, administers disciplinary action to subordinate personnel.
  • Maintains and ensures that Police Officers and Sergeants are scheduled for regular duty and special assignments. Provides the final approval for sick and annual leave requests. Completes and approves timesheets. Develops and approves new forms and documents.
  • Oversees and performs the operation of the community oriented policing program to include interaction with community residents, businesses, civic groups, schools, and other community service providers.
  • Maintains close working relationships with Tribal Government agencies and departments, the community, judicial, social organizations, including coordination with Federal, State, County, and local municipal law enforcement agencies.

Requirements:

  • Must be a high school graduate, or GED equivalent; or have at least three (3) years of law enforcement experience. Completed law enforcement training with a police academy, BIA training and supervisory enforcement Officer training or advanced academy training.
  • Must have full knowledge of tribal laws and ordinances of the RSIC; have complete knowledge of jurisdictional laws, i.e., Federal, County, and State.
  • Must be skilled in law enforcement and maintain a high level of supervisory skills to perform and train tribal police officers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of tribal, community, and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Must be able to meet and deal in a wide diverse cultural setting.
  • Must be able to pass annual physical and mental examination to be able to perform the duties of the position. Must qualify with a firearm as required.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Indian preference applies.
