Police Detective
Salary: $29.96 – $34.88/Hr.
Position Summary:
Under general supervision, the Police Detective is responsible for conducting investigations that lead to the apprehension of individuals who have committed crimes. This position enforces laws and ordinances, maintains public order, prevents crime, and makes arrests as necessary. This position will report to Operations Lieutenant or Designee and works closely with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and all protective services personnel to coordinate effective response to investigative, patrol, or emergency situations. This position is classified as a Patrol Officer assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division (CID). The assignment term is five (5) years, with the option for a sixth (6th) year upon supervisory approval. Officers who have completed their assignment may reapply for consideration after a minimum of twelve (12) months following their rotation out of CID.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct criminal investigations by identifying and interviewing witnesses, interrogating suspects, and collecting evidence.
- Register and book prisoners, make arrests, and testify in court proceedings as required.
- Patrol assigned areas on foot or by vehicle as needed.
- Maintain constant communication with dispatch via radio.
- Safely and effectively use firearms (pistol, rifle, shotgun) in accordance with department and/or TCOLE policy.
- Utilize a baton and/or chemical agents to control hostile subjects when necessary.
- Review offense and incident reports daily; prepare arrest records and submit detailed investigation reports.
- Present cases to the District Attorney, County, and Juvenile Intake divisions; provide specialized testimony in court.
- Administer CPR and first aid in emergency situations.
- Answer telephone calls and greet the public with professional courtesy, attentiveness, and concern.
- Maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, and investigative tools in proper working condition.
- Conduct narcotics-related investigations under the direction and supervision of the CID Supervisor, including field testing of suspected illegal substances.
- Work varying hours and shifts, including overtime, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Participate in on-call rotation based on the needs of the Department.
Requirements:
- Must possess an active TCOLE license – Intermediate level or higher required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of law enforcement experience as a Patrol Officer or equivalent Detective role.
- Must successfully pass an Oral Board interview and Written Examination.
- Must submit a Letter of Intent for Detective, outlining: Why you are seeking the Detective position, The skills and strengths you bring to the role, and What you hope to gain from the position.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds and push, pull, or drag objects weighing over 150 pounds.
- Must be able to run, walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time.
- May be required to climb, crawl, stoop, twist, balance, or otherwise extend/contort the body in the performance of duties.
- Must be able to hold a pistol, rifle, or shotgun in a ready position for extended periods of time without firing.
- Must be able to effectively use eyes, ears, nose, arms, hands, fingers, legs, and feet to carry out assigned duties.
- Must be able to forcibly subdue suspects and pursue them over long distances, including rugged terrain, stairways, and other obstacles.
- Must be able to force entry into buildings, rooms, and other barriers when necessary.
- Requires occasional exposure to mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards; fumes and odors; dust and mites; and toxic waste hazards.
- Involves the possibility of severe injury or loss of life in the line of duty.
- Must maintain 20/20 vision (with or without corrective lenses).
- Must be able to perceive a forced whispered voice at five (5) feet or greater, with or without a hearing aid.
- Duties are performed outdoors and indoors, often in extreme heat, cold, temperature fluctuations, and inclement weather.
