Police – Detective

Position Summary:
This position is responsible for investigating assigned criminal cases to determine the nature of criminal activity, prevent or solve crimes, and identify and apprehend offenders. The Police Detective plays a key role in protecting the public and supporting judicial processes. Work may occur during the day or night, including weekends and holidays, and often outside standard business hours.
Essential Functions:
- Responds to crime scenes; receives reports from other department personnel; examines crime scenes to obtain clues and gather evidence; identifies, collects, marks and preserves physical evidence; takes videos and photographs; identifies and collects fingerprints.
- Interviews or interrogates complainants, witnesses, victims, suspects and informants; obtains and receives signed statements; conducts undercover surveillance.
- Analyzes criminal activity and evidence to develop leads, identify witnesses, and develop informant sources.
- Writes and files reports on completed cases; details witness and testimony, occurrence of events, and criminal history of suspects; describes actions taken and results obtained.
- Investigates known or suspected criminals or facts of particular cases to detect or deter criminal activity.
- Obtains and serves criminal search and arrest warrants; obtains and serves subpoenas and motions.
- Apprehends and arrests suspects.
- Prepares, submits, and presents cases for prosecution; assists in developing court presentations; presents evidence and testimony in court.
- Serves as a member of special task forces as assigned.
- Coordinate investigations with other law enforcement agencies.
- Performs the duties of a Patrol Officer; enforces local, state, and federal laws; assists motorists; issues citations and makes arrests.
- Assists with the oversight of university camera systems and provide support for judicial and investigative purposes.
- Responds to any and all emergency situations.
- Performs administrative duties; employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, roll call and monthly reports.
- Responds to complaints, provide direction to the officers on scene, and evaluate decisions.
- Assist with coordination of CLERY Act Compliance.
- Must be available for recall in emergency situations.
- May be required to perform other job-related duties.
- May perform patrol duties such as answering calls, investigating traffic accidents, patrolling the university to deter crimes and traffic violations, handling domestic disputes, and other misdemeanor and felony calls.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Georgia POST certification in good standing
- Valid state issued driver’s license in good standing
- At least 1 year of law enforcement experience
- Excellent customer service skills
- High professional standards
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information
Preferred Requirements:
- Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
- At least 2 years of law enforcement experience
- Experience with Clery Compliance and Title IX
- Experience with trials and Court Proceedings
- Criminal Investigation Certifications
- Sexual Assault Investigation Training
- Sexual Assault Investigation Certification
- Experience with crime scenes and evidence collection
