The Chief of Police of the City of Gardner plans, directs, manages and oversees the activities and operations of the Police Department; maintains enforcement of all applicable federal, state and local laws; coordinates assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies; and participates in high-level organizational decision making as a member of the City Administrator’s Management Team. The Chief of Police has internal control over police activities and personnel and exercises discretion in the administration of the department. Work is performed under the direction of the City Administrator.
The Chief of Police is responsible for policy development, program planning, budget development and management, administration and operational direction of all police functions. The Chief of Police provides leadership to develop and retain highly competent, public-service-oriented staff through selection, training and day-to-day management practices that support the City’s mission and values. The Chief of Police is responsible for accomplishing department objectives and goals within guidelines established by the City Administrator. The Chief of Police oversees and ensures effective practices in two divisions: operations and administration. The functions performed under the operations division include patrol and animal control, and under the administration division include investigations, records, code enforcement, the SRO program, and property and evidence.
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Criminology or equivalent field, Masters Degree in an appropriate field is preferred; at least ten (10) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience in command of Police Operations with considerable management experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; graduation from the FBI National Academy or similar credential will be a plus.
