Police Chief
Salary: $131,788.80 – $197,683.20 Annually

Essential Functions:
- Performs a variety of complex administrative, managerial, and professional duties in planning, coordinating, and directing the activities of the Police Department.
- Provides effective leadership ensuring the functions within the Police Department are focused within an environment that is conducive to recognizing the creative attributes of officers and civilians.
- Ensures that the department offers and maintains an effective and positive Community Oriented Policing philosophy for the purpose of maintaining the highest possible credibility level within the area.
- Manages and leads police department staff including administration, operations, and civilian operations directly or indirectly.
- Develops, implements, monitors, and adjusts effective communication systems throughout the police department.
- Plans, coordinate, manages and evaluates police department operations.
- Develops, administers and interprets policies and procedures for the Department.
- Ensures compliance with changing requirements in local, state and federal laws.
- Prepares, reviews and coordinates City Council agenda and work session items applicable to the Police Department; attends City Council meetings and public hearings.
- Initiates internal investigations and directs corrective action.
- Prepares and presents the annual budget; prepares rational for additional budget and FTEs.
- Ensures appropriate training, accreditation and certification of Department personnel.
- Prepares and submits periodic reports to the City Administrator regarding the Departments activities.
- Attends conferences and meetings to keep abreast of current trends in the field, represents the City and the Police Department in a variety of local, county, state, and other meetings.
- Cooperates with County, State, and Federal law enforcement of officers.
- Ensures laws and ordinances are enforced and public peace and safety is maintained.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Criminology, Police Science, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or other relevant field.
- Experience may substitute for degree at a one-to-one ratio. .
- Master’s degree preferred
- Ten years progressively responsible law enforcement experience in command of police operations with considerable management experience; must be certified by Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission.
