Position Summary:

A Patrol Officer within the Enforcement Bureau of the Palmetto Police Department is a sworn officer appointed by the Chief of Police. This is a non-supervisory position directly responsible to a Patrol Corporal or Sergeant.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrol an assigned area on foot, bicycle, or vehicle; checks doors and windows of business establishments; investigates unusual crowds of people;
  • Enforces City code violations; enforces vehicle parking and operating laws; watches for and makes investigations of wanted and missing persons and property.
  • Visits the scenes of crimes and accidents; searches for and preserves evidence; pursues investigative leads; searches for and apprehends violators;
  • Escorts funerals, assists children at street crossings, and controls pedestrian compliance with safety laws.
  • Prefers charges; testifies and presents evidence in court.
  • Directs traffic control as needed; enforces traffic laws; and gives information concerning the location of streets, routes, and buildings.
  • May perform dispatcher functions.
  • Investigates places and persons suspected of being engaged in illegal activities; checks on operation of public places for compliance with the law, develops and maintains sources of information.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification, and completion of minimum standards courses set by Florida Police Standards Council (Minimum Certificate).
  • Completion of special courses and training as set by departmental rules and regulations. Must also meet all requirements as prescribed in the current Police Personnel Manual and Florida Statutes.
  • Knowledge of modern principles and practices of police work;
  • Knowledge of laws and ordinances;
  • Knowledge of first aid methods;
  • Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively and to report and record them clearly and completely;
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
  • Competent in the use of firearms and other related equipment, including emergency vehicle operation.
