Position Summary:

The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is seeking candidates for current and future Deputy Sheriff positions. In partnership with our community, the members of the Sheriff’s Office promise to provide all citizens with the highest degree of protection for their lives and property, and to develop community responsibility at reducing crime and enhancing safety through problem-solving tactics, thereby creating an environment where crime cannot flourish.

This is a sworn position. The incumbent provides law enforcement services and protection for the Hanover County community. This work involves an element of personal danger.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrols an assigned area and detects violations of traffic and criminal law and suspicious activity.
  • Responds to radio calls for service.
  • Serves warrants and makes arrests.
  • Handles domestic disturbances and a variety of citizen complaints.
  • Directs traffic as necessary.
  • Investigates automobile accidents and assists disabled motorists.
  • Conducts criminal investigations.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Experience in handling stressful and dangerous situations and managing them toward positive resolutions, preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable.
  • 21 years of age or older by academy graduation.
  • U.S citizen.
  • Minimum vision of 20/100 correctable to 20/40.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Passing score on written test.
  • Panel Interview.
  • Comprehensive background investigation.
  • Polygraph examination.
  • Interview with the Sheriff.
  • Physical exam/drug test.
  • Psychological evaluation.
  • Physical agility test.
