Position Summary:

The Tri-County Technical College Campus Police Department invites applicants to the role of Law Enforcement Officer. Reporting to the Chief of Police, the Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for enforcing State, County and Municipal laws, rules and regulations for the protection and security of persons and/or property of Tri-County Technical College. Under general supervision, enforces State, County and Municipal laws, rules and regulations for the protection and security of persons and/or property of TCTC thereby providing a safe and secure environment for the campus community. This includes patrolling campus grounds, responding to calls for service, enforcing laws and College policies, conducting investigations, and providing general assistance to students, faculty, staff and visitors. LEO II has the authority to make arrests, carries a firearm and is subject to working on a rotational shifts/campus on a 24/7 basis, as necessary. May supervise other law enforcement personnel. This position requires effective interpersonal communication skills, the ability to problem solve, organizational skills, and written communication skills to effectively relate and interact with a diverse population. Travel between multiple buildings, TCTC locations, and a three-county area will be required. Attend training which could include overnight travel. Combination of indoor and outdoor work, with exposure to various weather conditions. Potential exposure to confrontational or dangerous situations. Ability to collaborate with local community and leadership. Understanding of and appreciation for current student issues. Ability to manage crisis situations. Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate law enforcement activities within the designated area of responsibility and maturity supported by a strong ethical character.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrol campus grounds, building, and parking lots assigned areas for safety hazards, suspicious activity, to prevent crime and detect violations of law and college regulations. Seeks to prevent theft and damage to college property. Plans, directs and coordinates law enforcement activities within the designated area of responsibility. Identifies and reports safety and security hazards. Assists in effectively managing the Campus Emergency Management Plan.
  • Responds to complaints, reports of violations, and requests for assistance and emergencies, providing first aid, as needed. Investigates incidents, gathers evidence, maintains crime scenes, and completes appropriate documentation according to departmental requirements.
  • Directs traffic, controls access and movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, investigates traffic accidents, and issues warnings and citations to violators.
  • Keeps accurate and complete reports and records regarding activities and complaints pertaining to safety, enforcement of laws and college regulations, or fire hazards. Submits reports to supervisor for approval. Performs and documents monthly fire and safely inspections and initiates work orders for deficiencies. Maintains other records as required.
  • Enforces federal, state, and local laws as well as College policies and regulations and apprehends and arrests violators and testifies in court and other legal or administrative proceedings. Conducts background or other administrative investigations as appropriate. Executes orders from superiors.
  • Performs general police and public service functions including, but not limited to, maintaining order during emergencies, providing first aid, fire prevention, and community-oriented information/assistance. Performs other administrative services or special assignments as needed.
  • Participates in ongoing training to stay up-to-date on laws, policies, and best practices. Provides guidance and on-the-job training to other law enforcement personnel, as certified and requested.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma + 2 yrs work experience in law enforcement.
  • Must have a Class 1 Law Enforcement Certification through SCCJA or be able to transfer a law enforcement certification from another state following SLED/SCCJA established guidelines within a 12-month period of employment.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

Preferred Requirements:

  • Maintain certification and carry a firearm and wear a body camera.

  • First aid and CPR certification. Ability to patrol on foot for extended periods, climb stairs, move quickly as needed and ability to use force and physically restrain individuals, when necessary, in compliance with use of force policies.

  • Knowledge of proper law enforcement behavior and role.
  • Maintain proficiency with weapons, defensive tactics, and other modern law enforcement equipment and techniques. Knowledge of collection/ preservation of evidence, legal rights of suspects and law enforcement personnel, laws one is responsible for enforcing, and functions/ interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies.
  • Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, and communications equipment.
  • Ability to correctly evaluate situations and make good decisions, deal with the public in a firm yet tactful manner, effectively interview witness and suspects, read, and comprehend written materials, and write clearly.
  • Ability to effectively de-escalate confrontational situations. Conducts administrative or criminal investigations and keeps accurate and complete incident reports regarding such investigations.
  • Ability to effectively, plan, organize, and review work activities. Ability to effectively supervise subordinates when applicable.
