Position Summary:

The Deputy Sheriff, under the direct supervision of the Sergeant, performs generalized law enforcement and public safety work in the protection of life and property, and the execution of orders issued through the jurisdiction of the Sheriff of Martin County. This class works under general supervision and requires considerable judgment, initiative, and skill in a variety of situations.

Essential Functions:

  • Promote public safety in patrol area.
  • Respond to all dispatch calls in a timely manner.
  • Investigate illegal or suspicious activities.
  • Respond to a variety of calls that require several intervention approaches ranging from personal counseling techniques to the use of physical or deadly force.
  • Take control of accident scenes to maintain traffic flow, to assist accident victims, and to investigate causes.
  • Observe traffic and initiate traffic stops
  • Perform checks on dwellings, buildings and grounds to ensure prevention of damage by fire, theft and/or vandalism.
  • Respond to calls for assistance, administer first aid at crime or accident scenes; also securing these scenes to make sure the integrity of the scene and evidence are not compromised.
  • Verify that the proper legal charges have been made against law offenders.
  • Execute arrest warrants, locating and taking persons into custody.
  • Apprehend and arrest suspects without violating suspect’s rights or causing undue harm while observing officer safety procedures at all times.
  • Record daily activities and submit logs.
  • Prepare other related reports and paperwork disbursed to appropriate authorities.
  • Transport or escort prisoners and defendants en route to courtrooms, prisons or jails, attorney’s offices or medical facilities.
  • Testify in court concerning work activities.
  • Place people in protective custody.
  • Assist in the presentation of departmental training programs.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from High school or an equivalent program.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Certification from a Department of Law Enforcement Police Standards and Training Commission.
