Salary: $82,259.00 – $121,657.00 Annually

Position Summary:

To perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; to perform investiga­tive work and other special assignments; to participate in and provide support and assistance to special crime prevention and enforcement programs as assigned; and to provide courteous, efficient and responsive service to city residents and the general public.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrol a designated area of the city to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes; enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances.
  • Answer calls and complaints involving automobile crashes, robberies, and related misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Respond to calls for general public services including, but not limited to, domestic disturbances, civil com­plaints, property control, animal control and ordinance violations.
  • Check buildings for physical security.
  • May serve as Field Training Officer as assigned; train new officers on departmental policies, procedures and activi­ties.
  • Enforce traffic laws and ordinances; issue warnings and citations; direct traffic at fire and crash scenes, special events, and other emergency or congested situations.
  • May serve as Officer in Charge on an assigned shift in the absence of the Sergeant; supervise and participate in all shift duties when serving as Officer in Charge.
  • May perform a variety of special assignments including Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), VEGA, breathalyzer operator, property officer, youth officer, crime prevention officer, and other specialized assignments.
  • Conduct investigations of private property, non-injury and fatality traffic crashes; conduct traffic crash analyses and general traffic surveys.
  • Prepare a variety of reports and forms in a clear and concise manner, including reports on arrests made, activi­ties performed, unusual incidents observed complaints, and exhaustive case history reports.
  • Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public; take an active role in areas of public education relative to crime and crime prevention.
  • Execute warrants and serve other court-related orders; remain current on laws and procedures required for the processing of such warrants and court orders.
  • Display proficiency in the handling of weapons; partici­pate in continuing education in law enforcement and main­tain current status in State certifications.
  • Prepare for and review case histories; testify in court regarding traffic and criminal cases.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must provide documentation to show their duties are qualified duties similar to those of a police officer in the City of West Chicago. This will be completed through a combination of a review of employee evaluations, past and current assignments, and training documentation. Also, documentation must be provided showing that the applicant has fulfilled the Illinois Police Training Act requirements.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States;
  • Individuals must be at least 21 years old;
  • Education – High school graduate or equivalent thereof;
  • Possess a Valid Driver’s License;
  • Must agree to comply with all requirements of the position and possess the ability to pass all pre-employment examinations and training requirements.
  • Furnish upon request, a copy of the following: Birth Certificate, High School diploma or G.E.D., transcripts and diplomas of higher learning, training certificates, Naval or Military Service Board and Discharge Papers (DD214), professional licenses, a resume, documents confirming work experience, employee evaluations, and any other related material as requested or required.
