Recruitment Number 10-132, Juvenile Detention Worker I (Male), CO-03, Kapolei, O’ahu.
The immediate vacancies are temporary and temporary/on call positions.On call positions are identified as; on call for work scheduling purposes. The work hours vary from 0 – 40 hours per week depending on the needs of the Detention Home.
These positions are located at the Kapolei Court Complex.
Hours of Work: These positions require applicants to work on a rotating shift basis. You must be willing and able to work weekends, nights, holidays, and rotating shifts; and work outside of normally scheduled work hours.
Testing Information: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be required to pass two phases of testing scheduled on O’ahu. The first phase of testing is a written examination. Those who pass the written examination will be scheduled to take an attitudinal test. Applicants must pass both phases of testing to be eligible for employment consideration.

Education: If you are using education as a substitute for experience, you must submit a copy of your official transcripts or diploma at the time of application. If you are selected, you will need an official transcript (not a copy) indicating the completion of the training or the awarding of the appropriate degree.
- Performs simple assigned tasks designed to provide the incumbent training and experiences on the job; receives orientation on job requirements, practices and procedures at a detention facility, the goals and missions of the Family Court, the objectives of child and detention care, the programs of a detention facility, etc.
- Assists higher grade detention workers in supervising juveniles, and performs other duties as assigned.
Education Requirement: Graduation from high school. Excess experience of the type and quality described below or work experience requiring the ability to read and comprehend and apply written directions of a high degree of verbal skill may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
General Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience that demonstrates the ability to follow instructions, learn and apply work procedures, work effectively with other people, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Special Requirement: Experience and/or training which demonstrates the ability to lead, supervise, or instruct youths to insure a secure and safe environment.
Substitution of Education for Experience:
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university will be deemed to have met the General Experience.
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university with a major in social science, education, criminal justice, or other related field will be deemed to have met all of the requirements.
- Education in a baccalaureate program from an accredited university with a major in social science, education, criminal justice, or other related field may be substituted for the General Experience and Special Requirement on the basis of 15 semester credits for six (6) months of work experience.
License: A current and valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle is required.
Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement (28 CFR 115.117 and 115.317):
The position that you are applying for has contact with detainees in a juvenile facility or lockup. In accordance with the Federal PREA Law, the State of Hawai'i shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with residents/detainees in a juvenile facility or lockup who:
a. Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution;
b. Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or
c. Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in b above.
- Be able to work rotating shifts.
- Be able to work weekends, nights, and holidays.
- Be able to work beyond regularly scheduled work hours on short notice to staff a 24 hour/7 day secure detention facility; this may require work beyond 8 hours in a day and/or 40 hours in a work week.
- Possess traits and characteristics required to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Attend work regularly.
