Investigations Police Lieutenant
Salary: $108,000 – $125,000
Position Summary:
The Johnston Police Department is seeking a highly motivated, Iowa-certified law enforcement professional to lead our Investigations Unit as a Police Lieutenant. This position oversees a skilled team of detectives, crime scene investigators, and an investigative technician/analyst dedicated to delivering exceptional investigative services and maintaining community safety. The Investigations Lieutenant plays a key leadership role in managing complex criminal investigations, coordinating multi-agency operations, and ensuring adherence to best practices in law enforcement.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional supervisory and administrative abilities, have proven investigative experience, and a commitment to professional excellence. Candidates must have at least five years of experience as a police sergeant or similar supervisory role, a minimum of 60 college semester hours or an associate degree, and strong communication, analytical, and decision-making skills. The position requires certification by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at the time of appointment, a valid Iowa driver’s license, and residence within one hour of Johnston city limits within six months
Requirements:
- Graduation from high school or GED and 60 semester hours or an AA degree from an accredited college.
- Each year of active-duty military service may replace 15 semester hours of college course work.
- Minimum of five years’ experience as a police sergeant or similar supervisory role with demonstrated experience managing workload and personnel in a highdemand law enforcement setting.
- Must be certified by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at date of appointment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Iowa driver’s license.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Iowa peace officer weapons permit.
- Must reside within one hour of travel time to the city limits of Johnston, Iowa. Ability to work with MS Word, Excel and other software and computer applications.
- Ability and willingness to use, in accordance with law, policy and training, various defensive weapons including, but not limited to, striking instrument, chemical weapons, less-lethal weapons, and deadly force weapons and firearms.
- Ability to wear a protective ballistic vest as prescribed by the Police Chief.
