Entry Level/Lateral Police Officer
Entry Level
Recruits will complete a 32-week academy followed by 17 weeks of field training. Upon completion of training, the recruit officer will be assigned to one of our four patrol districts. All patrol officers work 4- 10 hour days with 3 days off each week.v
After an initial time on patrol, officers have the option of moving into specialized units, such as criminal investigations, traffic unit, swat, community support, technical services.
Below are some of the minimum standards to apply;
- Applicant must possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution of post-secondary education as certified through a commission on higher education of a regional educational agency for colleges and universities recognized by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, by your date of hire
- OR Four years of continuous active-duty military experience with an honorable discharge or, 60 hours college credits with 4 years continuous years serving as either an APD Police Service Assistant or, 60 hours college credits with 4 continuous years as an APD Detention Officer.
- Applicant must be a Citizen of the United States, by birth or naturalization.
- Applicant must be 21 years of age
Salary: $78,074.00 to $104,678.00 /year
Lateral
Out of state lateral recruits will complete a 14-week academy, while in-state lateral recruits will complete a 10-week academy, both then followed by 7 weeks of field training. Upon completion of training, the recruit officer will be assigned to one of our four patrol districts. All patrol officers work 4 – 10 hour days with 3 days off each week.

- Applicant must be eligible for certification from TCOLE
- Applicant must be employed as a licensed peace officer for a municipal, county, school/university, and/or state law enforcement agency with no service year requirement and have a
bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of post-secondary education or
- Applicant must be employed as a licensed peace officer for a municipal, county, school/university, and/or state law enforcement agency with no service year requirement and have a
- Applicant must be actively employed with 3 years continuous service as a licensed peace officer for a municipal, county, school/university, and/or state law enforcement agency if the applicant does not have a bachelor’s degree
Salary: $81,991.00 to $99,629.00 /year
ADDITIONAL PAY
$110 per Month Education Pay / $50 per Month -Detective Pay / $50 per Month -Bilingual Pay / 5% Police Training Officer / 6% Shift Differential / $300 Clothing Allowance
Stability Index Pay is paid at the following rates, after 5 years of continuous service.
Police Officer 112.33 x yrs
Sergeant 136.83 x yrs
Lieutenant 141.13 x yrs
