Emergency Dispatcher
Position Summary:
The Emergency Dispatcher is responsible for receiving, evaluating, and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls for service. This position coordinates the appropriate response by dispatching police, fire, medical, or other emergency personnel and equipment using a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system. Dispatchers serve as the first point of contact for individuals in distress and must remain calm, professional, and effective under pressure.
Essential Functions:
- Answer 911 and non-emergency calls from the public, law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical personnel.
- Determine the nature and location of emergencies, prioritize responses, and dispatch the appropriate units.
- Provide life-saving instructions to callers, including CPR and other pre-arrival medical guidance, using emergency medical dispatch (EMD) protocols.
- Operate a variety of communication equipment, including radios, telephones, and computer systems.
- Maintain detailed records and logs of calls, responses, and unit status.
- Relay information to first responders and coordinate with multiple agencies during emergencies.
- Monitor and update the status of field units and track their locations.
- Perform inquiries and data entry into local, state, and national databases (e.g., NCIC, DMV).
- Assist in training new dispatchers as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all policies, procedures, and regulations.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree in criminal justice or a related field preferred).
- Prior experience in emergency communications or a public safety environment is a plus.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certifications such as CPR, EMD, NCIC, and state-specific dispatch certifications.
