Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police
Position Summary:
This position provides effective management, leadership, and operation of the University Public Safety Department which includes sworn NC police officers and unarmed security officers. Responsible for planning, organizing and directing the activities of the department and assuring that law and order is maintained. Manages all law enforcement functions and other public safety requirements including inspections and reports to local, state and federal agencies required by law.
Essential Functions:
- Applies the unit’s fiscal, equipment and human resources to support activities and provide services that enhance campus safety/security
- Commands and controls public safety and law enforcement operations for major investigations, emergency management situations, and small to large university special events
- Assists and develops supervisory staff of each area within the unit; provides program and activity reports to senior management; prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence; makes recommendations for the addition of new programs
- Organizes, directs and controls personnel and resources of the unit to include holding subordinate supervisor positions accountable for the effective and efficient conduct of members under their supervision and control
- Applies advanced and innovative concepts and best practices in campus law enforcement to achieve unit objectives and continuously improve performance
- Attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintains awareness of new trends and developments in the field of law enforcement, crime prevention, campus security, emergency preparedness, and related support services; incorporates new developments as appropriate
- Serves as the primary liaison to local, state, and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies
- Writes, edits or coordinates the preparation of correspondence, reports, or other printed materials, research content items for precedents, correctness of presentation and applicability
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field is preferred.
- Current North Carolina Law Enforcement Certification.
- Lateral transfer applicants from out-of-state agencies may be considered upon review of resume. Lateral transfer applicants must be able to complete mandatory North Carolina Law Enforcement Certification as required.
- 10 years of law enforcement experience with at least 2 years in a managerial or supervisory position. Preference of 5 plus years in a supervisory position.
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Valid NC driver’s license.
- Applicants who have been unsworn for greater than 12 months, but less than 36 months will be required to complete the Legal Block of BLET instruction and successfully pass the state exam within 6 months of employment.
- Must complete all other certification processes including successful completion of the Campus Police Certification Examination.
- Successfully complete extensive background investigation, submit negative pre-employment drug screen and complete physical examination.
