Essential Functions:

  • Deputy Sheriff (BAILIFF) with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office must be 20 years of age and complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training Class (B.L.E.T.), pass and obtain a B.L.E.T. Certificate.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to making arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints and/or self-defense weapons when people are breaking the law, preparing investigative reports using proper grammar, exercise independent judgement, operate a law enforcement vehicle day and night in emergency situations, communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels, possess the ability to load, unload and fire handguns and shotguns under stress that justifies the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards. Mediate disputes and advise citizens of rights and processes.
  • Process and transport prisoners and committed mental patients, possess the ability to read and comprehend legal documents, including the preparation and processing of citations, affidavits and warrants, serve papers and summons to the general public.
  • Complete required continuing education to maintain certifications.
  • Applicants for this position must have the ability to remain focused under stressful situations such as enduring verbal abuse when confronted with a hostile suspect and be able to multi-task.
  • A Bailiff is responsible for courtroom security by maintaining order and security within the courtroom and related areas, ensuring the safety of judges, jurors, witnesses and the public. Responsible for opening and closing of the court, jury management by providing information and escort when needed. Applicant must demonstrate good communication skills in court, deliver legal papers such as warrants, subpoenas and court orders.
  • Escort inmates to and from the jail for court appearances and maintain custody of them during court proceedings.
  • Transport prisoners/inmates by vehicle when required.
  • Provide assistance and administrative support to the judge.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school documented by a diploma or transcript.
  • Applicant must possess a certificate of graduation from Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T.)
  • Previous years of experience in law enforcement will be recognized when establishing salary.
