Campus Police & Safety Lieutenant
Position Summary:
The Lieutenant is a key member of Dean College’s Campus Police & Safety Department’s command staff, responsible for ensuring the efficient performance of duties in accordance with college regulations. This includes responding to incidents, conducting patrols, investigating issues, and educating the campus community on safety practices. In collaboration with the Chief of Police and Captain, the Lieutenant assists in managing the department’s daily operations, providing leadership and direction to Sergeants, Police Officers and Campus Safety Officers. This role supports Campus Police and Campus Safety Officers in maintaining peace and order across campus, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all.
Essential Functions:
- Responsible for enforcement of all Federal/State/Local laws as well as College policy.
- Part of the department’s “on call” after hours response team.
- Maintain data submission for “open crime log” per the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act requirement.
- Oversee the Evidence Room area and the “destruction of” materials as needed.
- Assist with conducting employee performance evaluations.
- Conduct background investigations on new hires.
- Oversee residence hall safety initiatives.
- Review reports, provide necessary feedback to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Oversee CJIS requirements.
- Other duties as assigned or required.
- Campus Police and Safety Officers up to and including Sergeants on assigned shift or as directed.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree in Criminal Justice or related preferred.
- Eligible for appointment as a Special State Police Officer in accordance with M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63.
- A minimum of five years of full-time law enforcement experience, including at least three years in a supervisory role.
- Successful completion of a certified police academy that meets acceptable standards applicable to the Municipal Police Training Committee.
- Must be licensed to carry a firearm and meet qualification requirements as a condition of employment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with other campus partners and departments are required.
- Eligibility for certification as a law enforcement officer by the Police Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST C) after satisfying all requirements.
- Ability to pass an extensive background investigation.
