Position Summary:

The primary job of a Campus Police/Safety Assistant is to provide a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community through alert and thorough preventative patrol. In addition, they must be equally concerned with the courteous delivery of a wide variety of services consistent with the needs of students, faculty, staff, and general public. To effectively accomplish these purposes, all officers must have a clear understanding of their powers, duties, responsibilities, and limitations, and conduct themselves at all times with courtesy and an attitude of service. The safety officers are subject to the direction of the Police Sergeant, and the Chief of Police. All officers will maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with any person on campus. They will complete the necessary initial investigations and other reports as needed.

Essential Functions:

  • Notify the HSU Police Officer on duty/call or the Abilene Police Department when issues related to the protection of life and property are called in or observed. May occasionally direct and control traffic on university property. Notify HSU police or Abilene Police Department to prevent crime or disturbance of peace and make log entries of such events.
  • Campus Police/Safety Assistant may also be responsible for the following duties:
  • Patrols assigned areas on foot, or in a university provided vehicle. Lock and unlock buildings as required by a provided schedule. Discover crimes, notify to officer on duty of those crimes, maintain order, and answer calls and complaints.
  • Familiarizes themselves with beat and with persons living in area.
  • Initial interviews and questions victims, witnesses, and suspects to ascertain if the police should be notified.
  • Locates and preserves evidence.
  • Performs first aid and provides other assistance to accident and other victims.
  • Directs and controls traffic.
  • Issues written citations for traffic and other minor violations.
  • Attends community meetings to discuss crime prevention activities and crime problems.
  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities, except oversight of student workers.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Associate degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school preferred; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be enthusiastic about working in a team-oriented environment.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal (Emotional Intelligence) and communication skills; (ability to clearly express ideas and concepts orally and in writing) as demonstrated in the written competencies required for this position.
  • Strong commitment to the values of diversity and human compassion required.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and autonomous required. This will be validated through the annual review process each year.
  • Must have demonstrated understanding of changing student needs and ability to articulate these needs to the University community preferred.
  • Experience engaging student crisis and at-risk student needs preferred.
