Campus Police Lieutenant

Position Summary:
The Campus Police Lieutenant serves as a watch commander as assigned by the Chief of Police. As a member of the Public Safety Department command staff is responsible for leadership in maintaining public safety on campus, community police engagement, and fair and impartial policing as well as directing the enforcement of all federal, state, and local laws.
Essential Functions:
- Assists the Chief and Deputy Chief in implementing the Roxbury Community College Public Safety mission and the policies and procedures in support of that mission, which is aligned to the College mission.
- Supervises operations during a tour of duty and directs planning necessary to provide comprehensive law enforcement and public safety services.
- Oversees ongoing staff development and training, as well as disciplinary action and evaluation.
- Manages and appropriately allocates Department assets.
- Promotes an interactive, positive relationship between the College Public Safety Department and other departments or offices of the College, students, parents, faculty and staff with the goal of building trust and strong working relationships between the department and the community.
- Assists in the preparation and response to emergency situations in accordance with the Security and Emergency Management Plan.
- Oversees operations of the Public Safety Department during an assigned tour of duty. Allocates resources, ensures all logs, reports, and records are completed promptly, correctly, and thoroughly. Supervises the contract security officers assigned to the College.
- Takes corrective action and provides training for contract security and others in the department when appropriate.
- Responds to calls for service as an SSPO, conduct investigations, apprehends law violators, takes charge of scenes and gives direction to public safety officers.
- Assume the duties of the Chief of Police in his/her absence if the Deputy Chief is not available.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Possess an Associates Degree and experience suitable to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position. Bachelors Degree preferred.
- Possess at least three years of progressively responsible leadership in a supervisory position in a law enforcement agency.
- Experience and knowledge of law enforcement policies and procedures, crime prevention, investigations, training for law enforcement personnel, life safety programming.
- Knowledge management specific to a public safety agency.
- Demonstrated commitment and understanding of fair and unbiased policing.
- Ability to adapt policies and procedures to police reform measures on the local, state, and federal level.
- Demonstrated ability to address community concerns in a compassionate, forthright manner and to be visible on campus and to participate in the life of the campus.
- Possess an understanding of mental health issues, as well as the value of having officers trained as mental health officers and being front-line contacts in this area.
- Be a graduate of a MPTC certified Police Academy and be eligible to be appointed as a Special State Police Officer (SSPO) pursuant to MGL Chapter 22, Section 63 and meet the provisions of MGL Chapter 6E.
- Experience and knowledge of higher ed security and law enforcement.
- Knowledge of and experience with higher education principles, practices and procedures.
- Documented professional competence as a public safety administrator in higher education.
- Understanding of social media platforms and their use in community engagement, crisis management, and law enforcement.
- Police supervisory/command training such as LEEDA. MPTC, etc.
