911 Dispatcher
Position Summary:
Dispatchers must work under the general supervision of the Director of Alpena County 9-1-1 Central Dispatch. The dispatcher operates a radio console, multi-line telephone system, LEIN, computer terminal and other equipment. Accuracy, Brevity and Clarity are essential elements of the job. Candidates must be able to function in a high stress, team-oriented environment.
Essential Functions:
1. Operate a multi-line telephone console system.
2. Determine and assign the level of priority of the call and enter the data into a computer-aided dispatch system for radio dispatch purposes.
3. Perform emergency medical dispatch. Ask vital questions and provide pre-arrival instructions for emergency medical calls.
4. Monitor and operate a radio console.
5. Receive and respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency services and complaints.
6. Ask questions to interpret, analyze and anticipate the caller’s situation as to resolve problems, provide information, dispatch emergency services, or refer callers to other agencies.
7. Dispatch monitor, and coordinate the responses of public safety agencies (Fire, Law Enforcement and
Emergency Medical Services).
8. Enters, searches, modifies and disseminates information into and from local, state and national computer databases to public safety agencies.
9. Punctual and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.
10. All other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Education: Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Driving Record: Must maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record.
- Multitasking: Must possess the ability to listen and understand radio traffic and phone calls simultaneously.
- Flexible Schedule: Must possess the ability to work nights, holidays, weekends and frequent overtime.
- Relationships: Must possess the ability to develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with fellow employees, representatives from other agencies, and supervisors.
- Decision Making: Must possess ability to use sound judgment and decision-making skills to evaluate situations, establish priorities, and resolve matters.
- Effective Communicator: Must possess the ability actively listen and communicate effectively through clear speech and hearing.
- Accuracy: Must possess the ability to write clearly and spell correctly.
- Typing: Must possess the ability to type 35 WPM corrected.
- Testing: Must pass County provided physical and drug test as well as a background investigation.
- Successful candidates must achieve State of Michigan designated telecommunications status within 24 months of hire date.
