 Position Overview

The Polygraph Examiner position is responsible for the completion of polygraph examinations to determine applicant and employee honesty and integrity in accordance with AZPOST standards, and additionally, to provide an investigative tool for internal and criminal investigations as required by administrative, criminal investigators and prosecutors.

 

 

 Position Qualifications:

Minimum education and/or experience:   

High School diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience with investigations and applied investigative interviewing or polygraph examinations. A polygraph school certification from an American Polygraph Association accredited school.

NOTE:  Certification must be from an APA accredited polygraph school.
 

Preferred education and/or experience:
Preference may be given to those with polygraph experience in the law enforcement/police polygraph field.  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   

This position requires considerable knowledge of psycho-physiological aspects of polygraph and considerable knowledge of the following: polygraph techniques, polygraph chart analysis and interpretation; mechanical and other technical aspects of polygraph examination; knowledge of interview and interrogation techniques; good knowledge of supervision practices with the ability to direct the work of others. Experience using Microsoft applications i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook.
 

Specialized training, certifications, or other special requirements: 

A valid Arizona driver's license, or the ability to obtain one, is required at time of hire. The following training will be provided on-the job: FEMA NIMS – IS 100 and 700; OSHA training; ADP payroll training; PREA training. Prior to hiring, the Sheriff's Office requires that all candidates successfully pass a polygraph examination and background investigation.

 Essential Job Tasks:

Review applications, background questionnaires and case reports.  Conduct pre-examination interviews.  Compile and prepare the question format for polygraph examinations.  Conduct polygraph examinations in a timely manner.  Conduct post-examination interrogation, if necessary.  Evaluate completed examination graphs and prepare reports.  Research case law in reference to each respective examination.  Operate, maintain and calibrate the polygraph equipment.  Perform other duties/tasks as assigned by the supervisor.  Be present at work site to perform assigned tasks at the time and date scheduled/assigned by the supervisor.

 Selection Procedure:

The Maricopa County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates considered to be the most highly qualified.  Those selected will be assessed based on evaluation of listed education and experience.  The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a list provided by Human Resources.
 
Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to midpoint of the range, based on applicable experience, internal equity and budgetary allowances.
