Compliance with Government Code. In accordance with California Government Code, Section 1031, each employee shall meet the following minimum standards: 

1.    Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent 
resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. 
Any permanent resident alien shall be disqualified from holding a 
position if his or her application for citizenship is denied. 

2.    Be at least 18 years of age. 

3.    Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal records. 

4.    Be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. For purposes of this section a medical examination, including psychological screen, shall be required prior to appointment.

Knowledge Of

         Federal, State and County Codes and ordinances relating to law enforcement 

         Modern approved principles and procedures of law enforcement work 

         Department rules and regulations 

         County and City streets and principal locations 

         Court and evidence procedures 

         Court decisions affecting law enforcement practices 

         Radio procedures.

Ability To

         Read and understand written and oral departmental policies, rules instructions, laws and ordinances and general literature pertaining to law enforcement activities 

         Analyze and interpret legal codes, police problems and criminal evidence 

         Adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action 

         Obtain information through interview and interrogation 

         Keep accurate records and prepare clear, concise and understandable reports 

         Learn the use and care of small firearms 

         Establish and maintain effective working relationships

 Employment Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or satisfactory completion of an acceptable General Education Development (GED) test with an overall score of at least 45 and either 

Possession of a current State of California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic (or Intermediate or Advanced) Certificate 

Or: Satisfactory completion of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy 

Or: Current enrollment in a California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy (satisfactory completion is required prior to appointment) 

Note: Applicants qualifying under category (1) must submit a copy of the P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate with the application. If a period of three years has elapsed since employment as a full-time peace officer in California, successful completion of the California Basic Course Equivalency Examination administered by P.O.S.T. will be required before employment. 

Applicants qualifying under category (2) must submit a copy of a certificate of completion from a P.O.S.T. basic academy with the application. If a period of three years has elapsed since academy graduation, successful completion of the California Basic Course Equivalence Examination administered by 
P.O.S.T. will be required before employment. 

Applicants qualifying under category (3) must submit a copy of an official document showing current academy enrollment. Satisfactory completion of the academy will be required before employment. 

The three year time period in both of the above alternatives is computed from the last day of the last applicable full-time paid law enforcement employment and the date of appointment in this class. 

Documentation Required With Application: All applicants must submit copies of High School Diploma (or G.E.D) and applicable P.O.S.T. certificates/academy enrollment verification with the application. 

Criminal History and Background Check: Appointees must pass a criminal history and background check in accordance with California Government Code, Section 1029. 

Driver's License: Positions in this class require possession of or ability to obtain a valid current California Driver's License, Class C or higher prior to the date of appointment and a good driving record. 

Hours of Work: Incumbents in this class must be willing to work irregular hours, holidays, and weekends. 

Probationary Period 
The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12) months.
