Minimum Qualifications 

High school diploma or GED; must be a US citizen; must be at least 21 years of age prior to completion of the training academy; successful applicants must pass a written and a physical ability test; possess or be eligible for a Virginia driver's license; binocular vision of 20/25 corrected; weight in proportion to height; no conviction of felonies and/or habitual misdemeanors; no conviction of, or guilty plea or no contest plea to:  misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including petit larceny; any misdemeanor sex offense; or any domestic assault; pass an extensive background investigation, which includes a polygraph, psychological, medical and drug screening.  Virginia pre-certified officers who are a graduate of a Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services certified basic training academy and have been employed within the last year in a sworn law enforcement agency in Virginia and successfully pass all phases of the police selection process, would be required to compete our full basic academy and field training program, but will be considered for an increased starting salary.  Education/degree verification required.  This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.

Operate an assigned patrol vehicle; patrol assigned areas of the county for traffic and criminal violations; respond to citizen calls, complaints, and requests for information; conduct victim, witness, and suspect interviews; prepare detailed police reports; make arrests; testify in court; interact with community groups and organizations.  Perform other police patrol operations in the field as assigned and as needed.
